For nearly ten years, Susan Farewell was a travel editor and staff writer at The Condé Nast Publications in New York City. Ms. Farewell left Condé Nast to be an independent journalist and since has contributed travel, health and fitness, home design, art and architecture, parenting and education articles and book reviews to dozens of magazines including Vogue, Gourmet, Cooking Light, Travel and Leisure, Outside, Metropolitan Home, McCall’s, Child, Bride’s and Alaska Airlines. Her work also has appeared in newspapers around the country and in newsletters including BottomLine Personal.
Ms. Farewell contributes to many Connecticut-based magazines including Connecticut, Connecticut Bride, Connecticut Cottages and Gardens, Fairfield Magazine, Weston Magazine, Westport Magazine, Fairfield County Home and Country Capitalist. She also writes for the Connecticut Post, the Westport News and the Westport Minuteman. In Fairfield County Home magazine, she is the editor of the travel section.
In addition to her print work, Ms. Farewell is a broadcast journalist. She is a travel correspondent for WICC 600 AM, one of Southern Connecticut’s largest radio stations and until a recent station format change, served as a travel expert for Channel 12 in Connecticut.
Ms. Farewell has overseen several major editorial projects including newspaper supplements for the European Travel Commission and an educational newsletter, called JumpStart for the American Library Association and Friends of Libraries.
Ms. Farewell is the author of How to Make a Living as a Travel Writer (Paragon House, 1992 & Marlowe 1997) and Simon and Schuster’s Mobil Road Atlas and Trip Planning Guide, New England Atlas, and the Pacific Northwest Atlas. Her book, Quick Escapes from New York City was originally published by The Globe Pequot Press and is updated every other year. The seventh edition has just been published this spring (2007). Another one of her books, Hidden New England (Ulysses Press) is currently in its eighth edition and her latest book, Hidden Maine, was published in 2005.
Farewell has co-authored several books including Eyewitness Guide: New York (Dorling Kindersley, 1993), Frommer’s New England 1993 (Simon & Schuster), Recommended Caribbean Inns (The Globe Pequot Press), The Penguin Guide to New York City, The Penguin Guide to the Caribbean and Fodor’s Selected Resorts and Hotels of the U.S. , National Parks of the West and Great American Sports and Adventure Vacations.
Farewell is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers, the New York Travel Writers, North American Snowsports Journalists Association and the Eastern Ski Writers Association. She lectures on writing at writers’ workshops, universities, and schools across the country. She also teaches online at writerscollege.com. Ms. Farewell has a B.A. degree in Greek Classics from Boston University and College Year in Athens, in Athens, Greece.
